A streaming amplifier puts three things in one box: a network streamer that plays music from apps like Spotify, TIDAL and Qobuz, a DAC that turns digital music into an analogue signal, and the amplifier that drives your speakers. Add a pair of good speakers and you have a complete hi-fi system with very few cables.
1. Start with your speakers and room
The amplifier needs enough power to drive your speakers comfortably at the volume you listen at. Small bookshelf speakers in a bedroom or study need far less than large floorstanders in an open-plan living area. Bring us the make and model of your speakers (or a photo of the label on the back) and we'll check the match.
2. Decide how you'll stream
Most streaming amps support Spotify Connect and AirPlay or Chromecast, but the app you control everything from makes a big difference day to day. Ask to try the app in our showroom before you buy. If you want music in several rooms, check that the amp works with a multi-room system such as HEOS.
3. Check the connections you need
- HDMI ARC/eARC if you want your TV sound through the same system
- Phono input if you play vinyl
- Optical or coaxial for a CD player or older TV
- Subwoofer output if you plan to add a sub later
4. Set a realistic budget
Here's how the options in our range compare (prices at the time of writing):
- Entry level, around $700: WiiM Amp, a compact, easy way to add streaming to a pair of bookshelf speakers
- Mid range, $2,000 to $3,000: Audiolab 6000A Play and the Denon integrated network amplifier with HEOS, with more power and better sound for larger rooms
- High end, $8,000 and up: Atoll SDA300 Signature streamer/amplifier and the Linn Selekt, built for serious listening
5. Listen before you buy
Specifications only tell part of the story. Come in to our Sydenham showroom and hear streaming amplifiers on speakers like yours, with your own music. Upgrading from an older system? Get a trade-in valuation for your current gear.
